Hubble has spotted an ancient galaxy that shouldn't exist

"This galaxy is so large, so fully-formed, astronomers say it shouldn't exist at all. It's called a "grand-design" spiral galaxy, and unlike most galaxies of its kind, this one is old. Like, really, really old. According to a new study conducted by researchers using NASA's Hubble Telescope, it dates back roughly 10.7-billion years — and that makes it the most ancient spiral galaxy we've ever discovered." --Robert Gonzalez

Tonight was a great night for bug sex in my back yard. An absolutely beautiful display -- go fireflies.

Thank you NASA for the beautiful video. It was cloudy here in Michigan so I could go out and see it myself. I have a small telescope and had hoped to actually see it.

I couldn't be in NYC today to see this but my nephew watched from Hoboken. There are a nice collection of photos here. Space Shuttle Enterprise Arrives in New York City (Pictures)

I never saw a shuttle launch but I did see Discovery come home many years ago. Now she goes to the Smithsonian. Amazing picture and there is a video if you follow the link.

it is still 63 F outside but the wind is picking up and it is starting to rain.

Just saw Hugo and it is an absolutely splendid movie. I hadn't read the book so the surprises were still somewhat of a surprise to me. Caught on quickly because of my current field of expertise. I saw it in 2D because 3D gives me a headache. I could however see where they were going with the 3D and it looked like a couple of the rack focuses (foci?) would have been pretty impressive. Steampunk love! -- all those gears and locomotives. My only quibble was the speed of the trains coming into the station at the end of the line would not be going that fast ... it made it more exciting, but really.

"This video shows a computer simulation of the appearance of two merging spiral galaxies as they would appear through a telescope, including absorption of starlight by interstellar dust. The colors are approximately what would be perceived by the human eye. Credits: Patrik Jonsson, Greg Novak & Joel Primack, University of California, Santa Cruz."
