Arlo Guthrie/Alice's Restaurant

Music for Thanksgiving. I do have fond memories driving around the Berkshires and Stockbridge in particular. Never did find Alice's.

Turkey in the oven. Had a nice conversation about food with Sandy after she put the bird in the oven. Starting to smell the turkey.

Well actually in truth it is Thanksgiving. Just put a pie in the oven (picture will follow) and it was an experiment. I saw a recipe for a Maple Pecan Pie and thought it looked interesting so I wrote it down. When I actually started assembling the ingredients I found that there was much too much sugar in the stupid thing. So I compared it to my "It Doesn't Make Your Teeth Hurt Because It Is Too Sweet (tm) Pecan Pie". See I like pecan pie - carmelly custard with nuts tastes great but everyone makes too ghod awful sweet. So over the years I dinked with the recipe until I got it just right. Now I embark on a new adventure. I'll let you know how it turns out.

It is currently noisily raining. I looked out and the drops are not so organized as to be snow but not so liquid as to be rain. So I guess then it would be slushing out. Ground seems warm enough that it doesn't seem to be freezing or sticking. It is however making a lot of noise and disturbing Romy.

Good smells are starting to come from the kitchen.

The number of students in classes today was disappointing but not unexpected. I figure by my class tomorrow night it will be down to "not many".

Went and picked up the turkey at the co-op. It has taken over the refrigerator but then it always does. On Thursday I will be making the turkey, stuffing and gravy. The rest of dinner will be arriving with the guests. I have in the past moved turkeys from placed cooked to place of eating. It is a frakking pain, so I now make people come here. So much easier. I have to remember to ask Sandy to come over to help me get the turkey into the oven. I didn't get a big one but they are so awkward and my back has been objecting to everything I do lately. Whoever designed the oven door such that you have to lift a big, honking bird a long distance while arms are extended -- that person should be shot.

While at the co-op picking up the turkey I acquired some pecans. I think I have to make a maple pecan pie. There cannot be too much dessert, right?

The feast was feasted, presents opened, candles extinguished (the cake had powdered sugar on top so not blown out) and I am now home with cat & book.

A fun time was had by all.

While sitting at the stoplight at Foster/Saginaw I've watched an on going Fall ritual. A pair of black squirrels are attempting to relocate many of the horse chestnuts from a tree north of Saginaw to some where south. Back and forth they go, nuts in mouth. Now this might seem like a smart operation except for the fact that Saginaw is a very busy four lane street. I hope that the next time I sit at the stop light a don't see squirrel smears on the road.

On a different note, also involving squirrels and cars, an enterprising fox squirrel has decided that my car makes a great nut cracker. This time the nuts involved are black walnuts from two houses down. Whole nuts are left in my driveway and broken nuts are harvested. It is making a mess in my driveway, but I applaud the plan. Romy thinks it is fun as well. She sits in the window and chitters at the beasts.
